The Quick Answer
Use ChatGPT if you want one tool that does everything — writing, coding, image generation, voice mode, plugins. Use Claude if you care most about writing quality, long document work, or need a 200K context window. Both cost $20/month. Most power users end up paying for both.
Writing Quality: Claude Wins
This was the most surprising finding. Claude consistently produces prose that sounds more natural, varied, and human. ChatGPT's output is competent but has a recognizable "ChatGPT voice" — certain patterns and phrases appear repeatedly. Claude's writing has more sentence variety, better paragraph flow, and handles nuance more carefully.
For blog posts, professional emails, and long-form content, Claude produces output that requires less editing. For quick copy, social posts, and casual use, the difference is negligible.
Coding: Tie (With Nuances)
Both are excellent for code generation, debugging, and explanation. ChatGPT has an edge with its Code Interpreter (running Python in-browser for data analysis). Claude has an edge in code review and architectural reasoning — it's better at explaining why a design decision matters, not just what code to write.
If you use GitHub Copilot for inline completions, ChatGPT and Claude are both excellent for the "harder questions" that Copilot can't handle.
Document Analysis: Claude Wins
Claude's 200K context window vs ChatGPT's 128K makes a real difference. We fed both tools a 120-page technical specification. Claude maintained coherent understanding throughout and could answer questions about page 3 while referencing context from page 87. ChatGPT started losing coherence after about 60-70 pages.
Features & Ecosystem: ChatGPT Wins
ChatGPT has DALL-E image generation, voice mode, 1,000+ custom GPTs, Code Interpreter, web browsing, and deep third-party integrations. Claude has Artifacts (live code/document rendering) and Projects (persistent context). The feature gap is significant — ChatGPT does more things.
